The National Crime Agency (NCA) has reported a dramatic 55 per cent increase in arrests related to people smuggling, with the total reaching 300 within the UK and overseas in the year leading up to April 2026. This marks a significant rise from the 190 arrests recorded in the preceding year.
Expanded Resources Drive Arrest Surge
The surge in arrests is attributed to an expansion of resources, including a greater number of officers dedicated to tackling organised immigration crime. The NCA has been actively targeting criminal networks both within Europe and in regions such as Iraq and Libya.
Convictions and Sentences
During the 2025 to 2026 period, 59 individuals were convicted of organised immigration crime offences in UK courts following NCA investigations. Notable cases include Ahmed Ebid, who was jailed for 25 years for orchestrating a £12 million illegal boat crossing operation, and Adem Savas, sentenced to 11 years for supplying equipment used in Channel crossings.
Recent Operational Successes
Recent operations have yielded significant results. Six individuals were arrested after a lorry containing 23 people was stopped at Dover port. In Germany, four arrests were made as part of an operation targeting networks that supply equipment to small boat gangs.
Broader NCA Efforts in 2025
The NCA's broader efforts in 2025 included leading 400 disruptions against organised immigration crime networks. International authorities collaborated to seize over 500 boats and engines. Additionally, the NCA worked with social media platforms to remove more than 10,000 accounts or posts linked to such criminal activity.
