Uber is introducing a new safety feature that allows passengers to audio record their journeys directly through the app. The ride-hailing company says the move is designed to offer 'extra peace of mind' for users.
From Thursday, passengers can activate the recording before or during a trip with a simple button press. The audio content will be encrypted and stored on the passenger’s device, and only accessible to Uber if uploaded as part of a safety report. Drivers will be notified if recording is activated and can cancel the booking without penalty.
Uber is also introducing a verified badge for passengers who have had their personal details cross-checked with third-party databases or have uploaded an official identity document and a selfie. This badge will appear on the passenger’s profile when requesting a ride from next week, giving drivers more confidence.
Uber UK general manager Andrew Brem said: 'We are always investing in new ways to make journeys even safer. These new safety features provide both riders and drivers with extra peace of mind.' Local transport minister Lilian Greenwood welcomed the steps, saying: 'Everyone deserves to feel safe when travelling.'
Lucy Duckworth of the Survivors Trust called the features 'a positive step', while Kola Olalekan, an Uber driver and GMB union branch secretary, said the verification badge would give him 'extra confidence' and make him more likely to accept bookings.
