Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid expressed her disgust and sorrow during an emotional interview on Monday, following the inquest into the death of 20-year-old Libby Instone. The university student from Billingham, Teesside, died in August 2023 after being misdiagnosed with gastroenteritis and sent home multiple times, despite visiting an urgent care centre five times in 24 hours.
An inquest at Teesside Coroner's Court found that neglect contributed to her death, which was caused by an infarction of her small intestine. Libby's mother stated that her daughter was made to feel like a 'time-waster' by medics, and staff were reportedly watching a Women's World Cup penalty shootout while the family sought help.
During the interview, Libby's boyfriend Theo Corbett described the final hours before her discharge, saying she was not examined or attended to, and did not receive requested pain relief. Reid called the treatment 'disgusting', adding that it makes you 'feel sick' to think that someone dying was treated as a time-waster.
Theo Corbett said the family felt unheard despite repeatedly raising concerns about Libby's health. 'No matter how much we pushed, it just felt like we couldn't get anywhere,' he said. The inquest highlighted missed opportunities to investigate and provide life-saving treatment.
