An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a student in his 20s was fatally stabbed in Leicester city centre. Leicestershire police were called to the scene on Oxford Street just after 5pm on Tuesday following reports that a man had collapsed, and later confirmed he had been stabbed.
The victim was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary by the East Midlands Ambulance Service but died shortly after arrival. De Montfort University's vice-chancellor, Katie Normington, confirmed the deceased was one of their students and expressed devastation at the loss, offering support to those affected.
Detective Inspector Lorna Granville said initial inquiries suggest the victim was involved in an altercation with another man, who fled before police arrived. CCTV is being reviewed and officers are appealing for witnesses, including motorists with dashcam footage, to come forward.
Road closures have been implemented around the city centre, including Oxford Street, Infirmary Road, and several surrounding streets, causing major disruption. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has warned patients to allow extra time for appointments due to the closures.
