South African activists who were detained after their boats were intercepted while attempting to breach Israel's blockade of Gaza have alleged abuse by Israeli soldiers. The activists, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla of 50 vessels, were intercepted in international waters approximately 250 miles off the coast of Israel. They were held for several days at Israel's K'tziot prison, where some reported being shocked with electricity during interrogations about their participation in the flotilla.

Allegations of Mistreatment

On Saturday, the activists detailed their experiences upon returning to South Africa from Turkey. They claimed they were denied water, given unsuitable food, and prevented from using toilets for extended periods. When they protested, they were shot at with rubber bullets. Faizel Moosa, a former anti-apartheid activist, stated that the treatment was worse than anything he experienced under South Africa's apartheid regime, highlighting the daily suffering of Palestinians.

International Activists' Accounts

Dr. Margaret Connolly, an Irish activist and sister of Irish President Catherine Connolly, described dehumanizing conditions in detention. She recounted being stripped of clothes, denied blankets, and forced to huddle together in the cold to prevent hypothermia. Israeli forces confiscated her medical kit, preventing proper care. Connolly noted that many soldiers had American accents and shouted, "You should have thought of this before you came."

Three Chilean activists—Víctor Chanfreau, Claudio Caiozzi, and Carolina Eltit—also returned home, criticizing the Chilean government for what they called negligent diplomatic efforts. Eltit reported being beaten and held in precarious conditions with limited facilities.

Israeli Denial and South African Response

The Israeli government has denied the allegations, calling them false and baseless. Activists called on South Africa to increase pressure on Israel, including banning coal and other supplies. Connolly criticized the Irish government for rejecting sanctions against Israel.
