Russian forces are attempting to gain a foothold near the Ukrainian city of Kostiantynivka in the eastern Donetsk region, which forms part of a heavily fortified "fortress belt" defended by Kyiv's troops. Ukraine's army chief, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported on Saturday that Ukrainian forces are repelling persistent Russian infiltration attempts and conducting counter-sabotage operations within the city itself.
Battlefield Situation
According to battlefield mapping data analysed by open-source intelligence groups, Russian troops are now approximately one kilometre from Kostiantynivka's southern outskirts. Small areas in the southeast of the city have been designated as "grey zones," indicating contested control between the two sides. Syrskyi noted a significant increase in Russian offensive attempts throughout April, with 83 separate assaults by small infantry groups recorded in the sector since Monday alone.
Strategic Context
This latest advance comes as Russia demands that Ukraine withdraw from parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, a demand that Kyiv firmly rejects. Ukrainian authorities maintain their refusal to cede any territory to Moscow, despite ongoing military pressure. The fighting around Kostiantynivka is part of a broader Russian campaign to capture the remaining Ukrainian-held areas of Donetsk Oblast.
In a separate development, Russian forces launched a large-scale daytime assault on another Ukrainian city using hundreds of drones, underscoring the intensifying aerial campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas. The Ukrainian military continues to call for increased Western military aid, particularly air defence systems and artillery munitions, to counter the Russian onslaught.
