A hit-and-run driver who killed a 17-year-old girl in Derby has been sentenced to six years in prison. Peter Petrie, 41, struck Keely Birks while driving at 75mph in a 40mph zone, despite being banned from the road.
The court heard that Petrie had 23 previous convictions and two concurrent driving bans in force at the time of the crash. He was seen driving through a red light shortly before the collision, which threw Ms Birks 111 metres.
After the crash, Petrie fled the scene and abandoned the car. He was found hiding at a friend's house two days later. He admitted causing death by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance.
Judge Shaun Smith QC said: 'I want to make it clear there is no price for human life... Neither can a sentence be measured by revenge.' He added that nothing could bring back Keely to those who loved her.
