In a dramatic turn of events, two stars from the international reality television franchise The Real Housewives have been arrested and charged with shoplifting thousands of dollars worth of groceries from Publix supermarkets in Florida. Melany and Petrus Viljoen, known to fans as Mel and Peet from The Real Housewives of Pretoria, were taken into custody during a traffic stop in Boca Raton on Tuesday.
Felony Charges and Alleged Crime Spree
The couple faces felony charges of aggravated grand retail theft exceeding $3,000. According to Boca Raton police, the South African reality TV personalities are accused of stealing more than $5,300 worth of groceries from Publix stores between August 2025 and March 2026. Their arrest occurred while they were driving a black Range Rover, as reported by Miami's Channel 10.
Confession and Motive Revealed
Melany Viljoen, aged 39, who appeared on The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: South Africa in 2024, confessed to police officers that she was stealing because she was in survival mode. She stated that she had not worked since arriving in the United States due to not having a visa, according to an arrest report viewed by Channel 10.
Police allege that over the last six months, the Viljoens worked together during multiple acts of retail theft. There were at least two other alleged thefts at different Publix stores that were not reported due to their insignificant value, authorities noted.
Method of Theft and Stolen Items
Surveillance video and store records revealed that the pair used a ticket switching method, applying cheaper barcodes to more expensive items. Investigators reported that they allegedly stole 392 items, including La Marca Prosecco, San Pellegrino sparkling water, Maison Perrier sparkling water, Coca-Cola Zero, fruit, toilet paper, and various other groceries.
Although Melany told police she acted alone without her husband's help, investigators alleged that Petrus, aged 57 and a former attorney and businessman in Pretoria, distracted store employees while his wife committed the thefts. The couple admitted to being the individuals seen in the store's CCTV footage, per the police report.
Legal Proceedings and Background
The Viljoens are currently booked at the Main Detention Center in West Palm Beach, with a bond set at $10,000 each, according to inmate records. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office directed inquiries to federal marshals for information about their arrest, as they were booked on a felony charge. Federal marshals did not immediately return requests for comment.
Melany and Petrus Viljoen were featured on the first and only season of RHOPTA, which premiered in 2022. This show was the first Afrikaans-language series in The Real Housewives franchise, adding a unique cultural dimension to the global reality TV phenomenon.
This case highlights the intersection of celebrity culture and criminal activity, raising questions about the pressures faced by international personalities adapting to life abroad. The ongoing legal proceedings will determine the consequences for the couple as they navigate the American justice system.
