New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has signed an executive order banning immigration agents from accessing non-public areas of state-owned property without a judicial warrant. The order also prohibits the use of state property as a base for immigration enforcement operations.
In a related move, Sherrill launched an online portal where residents can upload videos and photos of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity. The state attorney general's office will review all submissions, though it cannot guarantee specific actions in response.
Speaking at a news conference, Sherrill criticised ICE agents, citing instances of alleged abuse of power. The executive order comes amid heightened immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, which has disproportionately targeted Democratic-led states.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Jersey praised the initiative. Executive Director Amol Sinha stated that the state must not be complicit in what he described as federal agents terrorising residents and violating constitutional freedoms.
