Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been released from a hospital in Tehran after more than two weeks, her supporters announced on Monday. The 54-year-old activist, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while imprisoned, had been urgently transferred from prison to a hospital in northwestern Iran on May 1 after losing consciousness. She was subsequently released on bail nearly 10 days later and moved to the Tehran hospital, where specialists conducted a thorough examination of her condition.
Ongoing Health Concerns
Supporters have called for Mohammadi to remain at home to receive follow-up care and daily physiotherapy. Her family has previously reported that her health has been deteriorating while in detention, partly due to severe beatings sustained during her arrest. In March, she suffered a heart attack, and she has been managing a blood clot in her lung since before her current imprisonment, which requires blood thinners and regular monitoring.
History of Imprisonment
Mohammadi has been jailed repeatedly throughout her career as a human rights advocate. Her latest imprisonment began in December when she was arrested in the northeastern city of Mashhad. Despite her Nobel Prize recognition, she remains under legal restrictions and continues to face challenges related to her health and freedom.
