Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace has sparked controversy after admitting she enjoys watching videos of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents detaining people in court. During an appearance on Fox Report Weekend, the South Carolina representative said she “can think of nothing more American” than Ice dragging individuals out of court and deporting them.
Mace’s comments drew criticism from both sides of the political aisle, including from former Republican congressman Joe Walsh, who called her remarks “twisted & cruel.” Walsh added that “the cruelty is the point,” suggesting Mace was appealing to the Republican base. Progressive commentator Richard Angwin accused Mace of “performative cruelty” and undermining constitutional due process.
Mace’s remarks came days after the Guardian reported on a video showing Ice agents telling a teenage US citizen, “You’ve got no rights,” during a traffic stop. The video intensified scrutiny of Trump administration immigration enforcement tactics. Mace also promoted legislation to defund cities that limit cooperation with federal immigration officials.
The congresswoman, who has gained national attention for opposing transgender rights and accusing her former fiancé of rape, is considering a 2026 run for governor of South Carolina.
