A mother who killed her 19-day-old daughter has been found guilty of murder after a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. Nicole Blain, 30, was convicted of murdering baby Thea Jane Wilson at her flat in Greenock, Inverclyde, on July 14, 2023.
The infant suffered three skull fractures, brain damage and bleeding behind the eyes, injuries consistent with being violently shaken and repeatedly slammed against a hard surface. Pathologist Leighanne Deboys told the jury the injuries were similar to those suffered by a car crash victim.
Footage from Blain's gender reveal party, held in February 2023, showed her storming off after discovering she was expecting a girl. The clip captured her clutching a pink knife and appearing agitated before walking away.
Blain initially claimed she had woken from a nap to find Thea on the floor and later blamed another child in the flat. However, medical evidence ruled out that explanation. On the day of the killing, Blain had been due to take Thea to her paternal grandmother's home but instead phoned in distress.
The grandmother's husband, Alan Wilson, described hearing 'piercing and extremely loud' screaming from the baby during the call. Blain was led handcuffed from court and will be sentenced next month.
