Minneapolis has been gripped by a deepening crisis since the Trump administration deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to the city in December. The operation, touted as the largest immigration crackdown in US history, has resulted in 3,000 arrests and two fatal shootings, sparking widespread outrage and resistance among residents.
The two victims include Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse who was shot and killed on Saturday after intervening when a woman was pepper-sprayed by border patrol agents. Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was earlier shot by an agent while observing ICE activity near her home. Their deaths have fuelled allegations of government brutality and rights violations.
Resistance in the city extends beyond protests, with residents organising mutual aid and ICE watch patrols. Many locals, including teachers, store clerks and Uber drivers, have formed a patchwork of solidarity to withstand what they describe as a siege. Racial profiling is a common complaint, with citizens like Joaquin and Gloria Espinoza, American citizens for over 30 years, reporting being stopped without cause.
The heavy-handed tactics include the use of tear gas and pepper spray on residential streets, as well as snatch arrests of children and adults. Local businesses have seen a downturn as people avoid work and public spaces. The operation has also fuelled political tensions, with Minneapolis having long been a target for right-wing agitation due to its association with the Black Lives Matter movement and its Somali-American community.
Despite signs of a partial de-escalation in the past 24 hours, the atmosphere remains charged. Observers and activists continue to document incidents, highlighting the constant threat of state-sanctioned violence. The crisis has become a sharp test of American democracy under Trump’s second term, with many residents vowing to continue their resistance.
