Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey has criticised the Trump administration's response to the killing of a US citizen by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, accusing federal authorities of 'hiding the facts'. The shooting of Renee Nicole Good occurred during a large-scale immigration enforcement action in the city.
Speaking at a press conference, Frey demanded the inclusion of state investigators from the Minnesota bureau of criminal apprehension in the FBI inquiry. The FBI has taken full control of the investigation, excluding local officials. Frey stated: 'If you've got nothing to hide from, then don't hide from it.'
The Trump administration, including Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, swiftly labelled Good a 'domestic terrorist' without providing evidence. This prompted fury from Frey and Minnesota governor Tim Walz, as well as other local figures.
Minnesotans were asked to observe a 'day of unity' on Friday, including a moment of silence for Good. Peaceful protests occurred in Minneapolis and other cities, with well-wishers placing tributes at the scene. Governor Walz praised the peaceful demonstrations and placed National Guard troops on standby.
The political fallout continues, with reports that 100 additional federal agents are being sent to Minneapolis. In Portland, Oregon, border patrol agents shot two people, again without verifying evidence being provided. The FBI is investigating both incidents.
