Man Charged with Murder in Newcastle Student Death

A 24-year-old student was found dead at Mansion Tyne student accommodation on Howard Street, Newcastle, on Tuesday. Police were called to reports of concern for welfare but confirmed the man deceased at the scene, launching a murder investigation.

Aaron Ray, of Mayfield Road, Sunderland, has been charged with murder and remanded in custody. He is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Saturday. The victim has not been formally identified, but his name is expected to be confirmed in court.

Officers remained at the scene on Friday, with a section of the block cordoned off for forensic work. Residents on the floor where the incident occurred have been relocated and had their fingerprints taken by police.

Sab Ahmed, a 21-year-old Newcastle University student, described an unnerving atmosphere. Another student, a 19-year-old, reported that a receptionist discovered the body after a welfare check. A 28-year-old female student expressed concern for safety, though police said everything was under control.
