Spanish police have said that the eight men suspected of gang-raping an 18-year-old British woman in Magaluf were not all acquainted. The alleged attack took place in the early hours of 14 August, with the victim reportedly meeting a group of tourists and later being forced to have sexual intercourse and filmed at their hotel.
Five French and one Swiss tourist were arrested shortly after the incident, and are in preventive custody. Two more men, both residents in France, were detained this week in the Alsace region and are awaiting extradition to Spain. A Spanish judge issued a European detention order for their arrest.
A spokesman for the civil guard clarified that while some of the suspects knew each other, they were not a single group of friends. The victim escaped from the hotel and sought help from hotel staff, who found her in the street. She was taken to Son Espases hospital in Palma de Mallorca for treatment and to file a rape complaint.
With the latest arrests, the Spanish civil guard has closed its investigation into this case, stating that the swift action of the team, in coordination with local police, enabled the capture of all those believed responsible for the brutal attack.
