A New Zealand mother has been detained in the United States over alleged visa violations, sparking fears for her safety and well-being. Sarah Shaw, a 36-year-old from Auckland, was reportedly taken into custody by US immigration officials while visiting her American husband.
Her husband, Daniel Shaw, claims she was "treated like a criminal" during the process, despite having no prior immigration issues. "They handcuffed her and took her away without proper explanation," he told reporters.
Family Left in the Dark
The couple had been living in the US on a temporary visa while awaiting permanent residency approval. However, authorities allegedly flagged discrepancies in her paperwork, leading to her sudden detention.
Her distraught family back in New Zealand say they've received limited information about her status or whereabouts. "We just want to know she's safe and when she might be released," said her sister, Emma Wilson.
Growing Concerns Over Treatment
Human rights advocates have raised concerns about Shaw's treatment, particularly given her status as a mother with no criminal record. Immigration experts suggest this case highlights increasingly strict enforcement of visa regulations under current US policies.
The New Zealand government has confirmed they are providing consular assistance, though officials declined to comment on specifics due to privacy concerns.
