The investigation began when an investigator from the Tontitown Police Department in Arkansas contacted the BCSO regarding a report of past sexual abuse.
The alleged victim, now 14 years old, told law enforcement about a series of inappropriate incidents that occurred approximately five years ago. Authorities state that the alleged acts took place during a 2020 family vacation in Panama City Beach, Florida, when the victim was just nine years old.
Escalating Behavior During Vacation
BCSO officials reported that Joseph Duggar repeatedly asked the young girl to sit on his lap, and his behavior appeared to escalate as the vacation progressed. In another incident, he asked her to sit next to him on a couch and covered them with a blanket, while rubbing his hands on her thighs.
During this time, Duggar allegedly manipulated the victim's underwear and grazed her genitals. He later told the alleged victim he was sorry, and the incidents ceased, according to officials.
Confrontation and Admission
The father of the alleged victim confronted Joseph Duggar about what happened on Tuesday. At that time, Duggar admitted to his actions both to the father and to a detective in Tontitown, the BCSO said. This admission led to his subsequent arrest.

Joseph Duggar has been charged with Lewd and Lascivious Behavior – Molestation of a Victim Less Than 12 Years Old, and Lewd and Lascivious Behavior Conducted By A Person 18 Years Or Older. Authorities with the BCSO stated that he is currently awaiting extradition to Bay County, Florida.

Joseph Duggar is the younger brother of convicted sex offender Josh Duggar. In a December 2015 appearance on Jill & Jessa: Counting On, a then-20-year-old Joseph expressed shock at his brother's criminal actions, saying, "I don't think there's any way any of us would have known that my brother was living such a secret life. It broke my heart."
