Police in Idaho have arrested a white supremacist prison gang member and his accomplice following a dramatic escape from custody that left three officers wounded. Skylar Meade, 31, and Nicholas Umphenour, 28, were taken into custody in Twin Falls, approximately 130 miles from the Boise hospital where the ambush occurred.
Meade, a member of the Aryan Knights prison gang, was being transported back to prison after treatment for self-inflicted injuries when Umphenour attacked the corrections officers on Wednesday. The officers were unarmed but wearing ballistic vests, with armed staff accompanying them. The pair fled in a grey sedan and later switched vehicles.
Authorities are investigating whether the duo are linked to two homicides involving adult males. Shackles found at the scene of one killing have tied it to the escape. Police confirmed the vehicle used in the escape was found in northern Idaho.
Meade had been incarcerated since 2016 for aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, with prior convictions including drug possession and grand theft. His sentence was due to end in 2036. Umphenour faces charges of aggravated battery against law enforcement and aiding an escapee.
Both men were housed together at an Idaho maximum security institution from December 2020 to January 2024. Officials say the gang involvement does not necessarily indicate a sanctioned event, and the investigation continues with potential prosecution in multiple locations.
