Annie Ramos, the wife of a US soldier, has been released from federal custody after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at her husband's military base in Louisiana last week.
Ramos, a Honduran immigrant who arrived in the United States as a toddler, was taken into custody on 2 April, days after marrying Staff Sergeant Matthew Blank. The couple had travelled to the base to enrol her in military spouse benefits.
A removal order had been issued for Ramos in 2005 after her family missed an immigration hearing. Her application for protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (Daca) programme in 2020 was not processed.
In a statement following her release, Ramos said: 'All I have ever wanted is to live with dignity in the country I have called home since I was a baby.' She expressed gratitude to her husband and community for their support.
The Department of Homeland Security cited a final order of removal in Ramos's case, stating that 'this administration is not going to ignore the rule of law'. Ramos now intends to pursue legal status and continue her education.
