A medic from Ascension Island, exhibiting symptoms of hantavirus, is currently receiving specialist care at a hospital in London. The individual is among those linked to an outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has so far resulted in 11 reported cases and three fatalities.
Arrival of Asymptomatic Contacts
Nine British individuals from St Helena and Ascension Island, who are potentially exposed to hantavirus but remain asymptomatic, are expected to arrive in the UK on Sunday evening. They will complete their self-isolation period at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral, under the supervision of the NHS’s High Consequence Infectious Diseases network.
Outbreak Background
The repatriations are directly linked to the hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship. Hantavirus is a severe viral infection that can be fatal, transmitted through rodent droppings and urine.
The UK Health Security Agency has deployed a Public Health Rapid Support Team to the affected overseas territories to assist with testing and infection control measures. This team will work alongside local health authorities to contain the spread of the virus.
Health officials are closely monitoring the situation and have assured the public that all necessary precautions are being taken to prevent further transmission within the UK.
