Golders Green suspect referred to Prevent in 2020

The man suspected of carrying out a knife attack in Golders Green, north-west London, was previously referred to the Government's counter-extremism programme, according to Scotland Yard. The referral to Prevent was made in 2020 but was closed in the same year.

Attack details

Two Jewish men were injured in the attack: Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Ben Baila, also known locally as Moshe Shine, 76. Both were taken to hospital after being stabbed. A 45-year-old man, described by police as a Somali-born British national, was arrested at the scene.

Home Secretary's statement

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that the suspect came to the UK lawfully as a child in the 1990s. Police across the country have increased patrols in response to the incident.
