Surrey Police have stated that they have found no evidence to support a reported rape outside a church in Epsom, nor any indication that asylum seekers or immigrants were involved. The investigation into the alleged incident, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday near Ashley Road, remains ongoing.
Assistant Chief Constable Sarah Grahame confirmed that officers have reviewed extensive CCTV footage, interviewed potential witnesses, and conducted forensic investigations. 'To date, we have not found any evidence of the offence as reported,' she said, adding that no suspect descriptions have been released due to limited information.
The initial report claimed a woman in her 20s was followed and assaulted after leaving Labyrinth Epsom nightclub. In response, hundreds of protesters gathered in the town centre on Wednesday evening, with some throwing objects at police. Officers, including public order units, were deployed until the crowd dispersed around 8pm.
Local MP Helen Maguire condemned the disruption, calling for peaceful protest and urging outsiders not to spread division. A community service, 'Hope for Epsom', was held at the Methodist Church, where Reverend Catherine Hutton expressed outrage at the assault while emphasising the town's kindness.
Police have increased their presence in Epsom for the upcoming weekend and continue to appeal for witnesses as the investigation proceeds.
