British Tourists Arrested in Benidorm Over Alleged Fake Kidnapping Plot
Two British tourists have been arrested in the popular Spanish resort of Benidorm, Costa Blanca, after allegedly staging a fake kidnapping in a bizarre attempt to extort extra holiday cash. The incident forced local police to suspend all ongoing investigations and deploy a large number of officers, including a specialist anti-hostage unit from Madrid.
Police Operation Launched After Interpol Tip-Off
The investigation began when Interpol alerted Spanish authorities to a possible abduction of a British national in Benidorm. A relative of the alleged victim had contacted UK police after receiving disturbing videos showing one man covered in blood while another threatened him with a knife. The relative also provided recordings of ransom demands, with the supposed kidnapper warning that the hostage would be killed if €830 (approximately £725) was not paid into a specified bank account.
In response, Benidorm police mobilised all available resources, halting other investigations to focus on locating the kidnap site. A discreet watch was established at a hotel identified as the likely location, where officers observed two men matching the descriptions of the kidnapper and victim exiting the building while chatting amicably. This raised immediate suspicions, leading to their interception and arrest.
Staged Crime for Quick Cash
Upon investigation, it became clear that the kidnapping had been staged solely to obtain quick cash. The two men, aged 37 and 51, were arrested on suspicion of simulating a crime and fraud. During processing, police discovered that the alleged kidnapper had used a false name both when checking into the hotel and during initial identification, resulting in an additional charge of identity fraud.
The pair now face severe consequences, including potential prison time and a hefty compensation bill for the costs of the extensive police operation. If found guilty, they may be required to reimburse authorities for the resources expended, which included mobilising a large team of officers and specialist units.
Impact on Police Resources and Previous Incidents
The incident virtually paralysed police activity in the holiday resort, highlighting the significant disruption caused by such hoaxes. This is not the first time Benidorm has seen similar crimes involving British nationals. In April of the previous year, a British woman was arrested for masterminding a bungled robbery and kidnapping near Benidorm, with police seizing weapons including Tasers and an air pistol during that investigation.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the two men have appeared in court or if they are being held in custody or released on bail. The hotel where they stayed has not been named, and authorities continue to investigate the full extent of their actions.
