A 15-year-old British girl has been found dead in the sea near a marina in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria. Her body was discovered floating around 9am on Saturday, March 28, after her mother reported her missing.
The teenager's body was found approximately 200 metres from the coast, between the Puerto Base marina and Balito beach. Coastguard officials recovered the body from the water.
Police initially believed the body was that of a homeless person, but quickly linked it to the missing girl. The mother was called in to identify the body.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the girl failed to meet her family at 8pm on Friday at Amadores Beach. The family's holiday apartment is in the Barranco Agua La Perra area, close to the tourist resort in the municipality of Mogan.
Detectives from the Civil Guard are leading the investigation and say all theories are being considered. A post-mortem examination is expected to take place in the coming hours.
