Bodycam Footage Captures Funeral Director's Dramatic Arrest on Heathrow Flight
Disturbing police bodycam footage has been released, showing the moment disgraced funeral director Robert Bush was arrested on an American Airlines plane at London Heathrow Airport. The arrest occurred on March 10, 2024, just days after a major investigation uncovered over 30 bodies at his funeral home in Hull.
Arrest on a Crowded Plane
The footage, shared by Humberside Police, depicts officers boarding the flight around 2:30 PM after it had just landed at Heathrow. As police moved down the aisle, a flight attendant's voice can be heard instructing passengers to remain seated. The lead officer approached a row of seats and asked, "Who is Robert? Can you stand up and come with us outside, please?" Bush, appearing visibly stunned, was allowed to collect his belongings from the overhead locker before being escorted off the plane.
He was then formally arrested on suspicion of multiple offences, including prevention of a lawful and decent burial, fraud by false representation, and fraud by abuse of position. The footage has now been made public following Bush's submission of guilty pleas at Hull Crown Court.
Court Proceedings and Charges
Robert Bush, 48, formerly of Kirk Ella and recently of East Busk Lane in Otley, West Yorkshire, was the director of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. In court, he altered his pleas to guilty on 30 charges of preventing a decent burial of a dead body and one charge of theft from charities. This follows a previous plea hearing where he denied those 31 charges but admitted to 36 fraud-related offences.
Journalists from national outlets gathered outside the city centre court from early morning to cover the high-profile case. An eight-week trial had been scheduled for October, but with the switch to guilty pleas, Bush's next appearance will be a sentencing hearing expected in July.
Background of the Investigation
The arrest is part of a larger probe into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, where 34 bodies were recovered, sparking widespread outrage and media attention. The case has highlighted significant failures in the funeral industry, with Bush accused of a web of lies, including stealing mourners' cash and secretly stockpiling bodies.
This incident underscores the importance of regulatory oversight in funeral services and the severe consequences of such breaches. The release of the bodycam footage provides a stark visual reminder of the law enforcement response to this distressing scandal.
