A 21-year-old Syrian national has been rearrested in connection with a vicious knife attack that severely disfigured an American tourist on a tram in Dresden, Germany. The suspect, identified only as Majid A, was initially detained on Sunday but released 12 hours later due to insufficient evidence. Police confirmed his rearrest on Tuesday morning after new evidence emerged.
The victim, John Rudat, 21, an American model and paramedic, sustained a deep gash across his face from a six-inch blade. He was visiting Dresden to see his former host family when he intervened to protect two women from harassment and assault. Rudat described the attack in a video, claiming the assailant was an illegal immigrant and known drug dealer, though authorities have not verified these claims.
Police stated that the Dresden Public Prosecutor's Office ordered the provisional arrest after further investigation results strengthened suspicion against Majid A. An arrest warrant was issued and executed. Authorities continue to search for a second suspect believed to have slashed Rudat.
Rudat underwent extensive surgery in Germany and is expected to return to the US in one to two weeks. A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $32,500 to support his recovery. His brother Logan, also a first responder, expressed pride in Rudat's heroic actions, saying, 'It's part of his character. That’s just the way we were raised.'
