Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly condemned Russia's unilateral ceasefire, declared for its Victory Day celebrations and extended until 10 May, as 'strange and twisted' logic. The ceasefire came into effect despite criticism from Ukraine, with Zelensky suggesting that Russia intends to celebrate before resuming hostilities.
Ceasefire Violations and New Strikes
Russia's ceasefire follows its disregard for Ukraine's own unilateral ceasefire earlier this week, which resulted in numerous casualties from Russian strikes. According to Zelensky, Russia answered Ukraine's ceasefire offer with 'new strikes and attacks,' undermining any hope for a temporary halt in fighting.
Victory Day Preparations
Vladimir Putin is scheduled to attend a military parade in Red Square on Saturday, with increased security measures in place due to concerns about potential Ukrainian attacks. Russia reported that more than 50 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and downed in the Moscow region between yesterday morning and early this morning.
The Russian ceasefire, initially declared for Victory Day, has been extended, but Ukrainian officials remain skeptical. Zelensky's remarks highlight the deep mistrust between the two nations, as the war continues to escalate despite attempts at temporary pauses.
