Biden Vows to Stay in Race at Wisconsin Rally Amid Age Concerns

President Joe Biden delivered a defiant message at a rally in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday, insisting he is not stepping down despite mounting concerns over his age and a faltering debate performance. “I am running and am gonna win again,” Biden told the crowd, addressing speculation about his future in the 2024 race.

Biden dismissed criticism about his age, pointing to his administration’s achievements. “I wasn’t too old to create over 50m new jobs,” he said. The rally was part of a blitz of public appearances aimed at reinvigorating support after his confused debate against Donald Trump last week sparked calls from Democratic leaders and donors for him to step aside.

The president focused heavily on Trump, warning that a second term could end democracy. “Donald Trump isn’t just a convicted criminal. He’s a one-man crime wave,” Biden said, referencing the January 6 insurrection and the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on presidential immunity.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler acknowledged the debate was “rough” but stressed the stakes. “It was even more scary watching the US supreme court announce that presidents have immunity from prosecution,” he said. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway told the crowd that “the specter of dictatorship looms over America,” emphasising the need to protect voting rights.

Biden was joined by progressive Congressman Mark Pocan and Governor Tony Evers, who highlighted the state’s use of federal funds for infrastructure. “The future of democracy runs right through the state of Wisconsin,” Evers said. Supporters like union leader Pat Raes dismissed critics as “fearmongers,” while retiree Wendell Mullins expressed doubt, saying, “If the election was held tomorrow, Trump would beat him easy.”
