Trump's Sway Over GOP Races: Texas Senate Primary Hangs in the Balance
Betting markets are increasingly confident that former President Donald Trump will soon endorse Senator John Cornyn in the Texas Republican primary, a move that could decisively shape the outcome of this high-stakes contest. The race between Cornyn and disgraced Attorney General Ken Paxton has become a political tug-of-war, with Republicans anxiously awaiting Trump's decision.
Primary Results Set Stage for Prolonged Battle
On Tuesday evening, Republicans breathed a half-sigh of relief when Senator John Cornyn placed first in the Texas Republican primary against Attorney General Ken Paxton. However, neither candidate secured a majority, forcing a runoff that will extend the contest for another twelve weeks. Cornyn outperformed expectations, as pre-election polls had placed him second in the three-way race.
Many conservatives hope this stronger-than-expected showing will convince Trump to endorse the incumbent senator, whom numerous conservative voters have historically viewed with skepticism. Their optimism stems from Paxton's considerable baggage: he has been impeached, is embroiled in a messy divorce, and has championed extreme policies that could alienate swing voters in a general election.
Democratic Momentum and Republican Concerns
The Democratic primary between Representative Jasmine Crockett and state Representative James Talarico concluded with Talarico winning outright, a result that should alarm Republicans. Notably, more Democrats than Republicans participated in this Texas primary, signaling potential enthusiasm gaps. Democrats appear excited about Talarico's prospects, with prominent figures like Senator Bernie Sanders offering strong support.
"I think he stands an excellent chance to become next senator from Texas. I have always believed that Texas has the potential to be a progressive state," Sanders told The Independent, referencing his own 2020 campaign strength in the majority-Hispanic Rio Grande Valley, where Talarico also performed well. Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia added, "I like Talarico. I think he is going to run an incredible race in Texas, and hopefully we'll have yet another pastor in the United States Senate."
Betting Markets Signal Trump's Likely Endorsement
The relationship between Donald Trump and Senator John Cornyn has never been easy, but prediction markets are now indicating a probable endorsement for Cornyn. Following a report from The Atlantic suggesting Trump would likely back the four-term incumbent, the prediction platform Kalshi dramatically shifted its projections. Paxton's perceived chance of winning dropped from 71.1 percent to Cornyn's solid 80.3 percent advantage.
PolyMarket data further supports this trend, showing an 86 percent probability of a Cornyn endorsement, with "yes" shares trading at 89 cents versus "no" shares at just 16 cents. Trump has stated he will make an endorsement soon if neither candidate withdraws, adding urgency to the speculation.
Conservative Opposition and Strategic Calculations
Some staunch conservatives who support Paxton are actively lobbying Trump to reconsider. Talk show host Mark Davis warned on social media, "Trump endorsement may be Cornyn's only chance, but Trump should know that many in his TX base will be deeply alienated, and may not comply." Conservative activist Ned Ryun echoed this sentiment, arguing that Trump has an opportunity to remove a senator he views as disloyal.
However, the Republican calculus remains straightforward: the GOP base largely follows Trump's lead, and even Texas Republicans who dislike Cornyn recognize that Paxton could jeopardize the seat in the general election. Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma summarized the party's position: "If Paxton wins every poll out there says that Texas is at risk. If Cornyn wins, Texas is not at risk. So let's settle it now."
Trump's Endorsement Record: Successes and Failures
Trump's influence in Republican primaries is well-documented, even after leaving office. In 2022, his endorsement propelled Mehmet Oz to a narrow primary victory in Pennsylvania's Senate race and transformed J.D. Vance from a struggling candidate into Ohio's senator and eventual vice presidential nominee. He also cleared fields for Herschel Walker in Georgia and Kari Lake in Arizona.
Yet his record contains significant blemishes. That same year, his endorsed candidate David Perdue suffered a crushing defeat against Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. Trump's recent Texas endorsements have also faltered, with Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller losing to Governor Greg Abbott's preferred candidate and Representative Tony Gonzales facing scandal and withdrawing from his race after an ethics investigation.
Furthermore, a Trump primary endorsement does not guarantee general election victory, as demonstrated by the losses of Oz, Lake, and Walker in 2022. Trump also tends to endorse candidates in safe seats or avoid difficult decisions, such as his ambiguous "ERIC" endorsement in Missouri's 2022 Senate race.
Financial and Strategic Implications
A Trump endorsement for Cornyn could have substantial financial benefits for Republicans. It might reduce the need to spend an estimated $100 million defending the Texas seat, allowing the party to redirect resources to competitive races in Alaska, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, and Maine. This strategic advantage adds another layer to the endorsement decision, as Republicans seek to optimize their Senate campaign investments.
As the Texas Senate primary enters its runoff phase, all eyes remain on Donald Trump. His endorsement could settle the Republican contest, but his mixed record serves as a reminder that even the most influential political figures face unpredictable outcomes in America's volatile electoral landscape.
