Spain PM calls snap election after housing bill defeat

Spain's Socialist prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, has announced a snap general election for Sunday 29 November. The decision comes three days after rightwing parties torpedoed the emergency legislation his minority government had put forward in response to growing public anger over the housing crisis.

Widely expected announcement

Sánchez, who has been in office since 2018, made the announcement in a televised address on Monday morning. The move had been widely expected following the defeat of the housing bill.

Election date set

The election will be held on Sunday 29 November, giving parties a short campaign period before voters head to the polls.
