The 43-year-old moderate Democrat announced his candidacy on Thursday, positioning himself as a pragmatic alternative in a crowded primary field.
A Moderate Democrat Enters the Fray
Mayor Mahan, who was elected to lead San Jose in 2023 with his current term extending to 2028, has built a reputation on firm stances concerning energy costs, homelessness, drug policy, and housing. His gubernatorial bid comes as Governor Newsom faces term limits, making him ineligible to seek re-election, a fact highlighted in recent reporting by the New York Times.
In his announcement, Mahan did not hold back in his criticism of Newsom's governance, particularly targeting the sitting governor's approach to crime and homelessness. He also offered a sharp rebuke of Newsom's relationship with former President Donald Trump, characterising it as a 'blind leap into meme land.'
Silicon Valley's Financial and Political Backing
Strategically situated in the heart of Silicon Valley, Mahan's campaign is expected to benefit significantly from his deep tech industry connections. Political analysts suggest these ties will be a formidable asset for campaign fundraising, providing a substantial financial edge.
This support has already materialised, with prominent figures publicly endorsing his run. Tech magnate Rick Caruso, who had previously considered a gubernatorial bid himself, expressed strong support on social media platform X. 'I am very excited by my good friend Matt Mahan's decision to run for Governor,' Caruso posted. 'Matt is a practically minded moderate and a thoughtful leader brimming with innovative new ideas. He is a proven manager with exactly the skill set I think California needs to get on the right track.'
Further bolstering his tech credentials, Mahan is a former startup founder and was classmates with Meta's Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard University. Zuckerberg reportedly encouraged Mahan to found Brigade, a digital tool for political organisation.
The 'Real Deal' for California?
Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan added his voice to the chorus of support, declaring Mahan the 'real deal' for Californians in a post on X. 'Matt Mahan just declared for Governor and California finally has a real choice,' Tan wrote. 'He's not another Sacramento creature. He's a former startup founder who became mayor of the largest city in Silicon Valley and actually delivered results.' Tan's comments appeared to be a pointed reference to Newsom's controversial political manoeuvres.
Mahan's campaign philosophy centres on a 'back to basics' leadership style, focusing intently on local issues and tangible outcomes. 'I believe that the best resistance is demonstrating results and showing that a state with our values and our diversity can produce greater economic opportunity and a higher quality of life for all of our residents,' Mahan told the New York Times.
He also revealed a personal impetus for his run, sharing on X that his wife, Silvia, encouraged him to enter the race, telling him, 'I think our state needs you.'
The Crowded Road to Sacramento
The June primary is shaping up to be highly competitive, with nine Democratic candidates currently in the field. Notable figures include former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, current Attorney General Xavier Becerra, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, former State Controller Betty Yee, Congressman Eric Swalwell, and businessman Tom Steyer. As of now, political observers note there is no clear frontrunner.
On the Republican side, declared candidates thus far include Sheriff Chad Bianco, former advisor Steve Hilton, and businessman Jon Slavet. The Daily Mail has reached out to both Governor Newsom and Mayor Mahan for comment on the developing race.
