Plaid Cymru Holds Treorchy Seat in RCT By-Election

Plaid Cymru has successfully defended its council seat in Treorchy following a by-election held on Thursday, June 25. Richard Clarke was elected as the new councillor for the ward on Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, replacing Sera Evans, who was elected to the Senedd for the Afan Ogwr Rhondda ward last month.

Clarke secured 1,147 votes, a commanding lead over his nearest rival, Craig Ford of Reform UK, who received 260 votes. David Morris of Welsh Labour garnered 164 votes, while Cerys Walker of the Welsh Conservative Party received 27, and Daniel Buck of the Welsh Green Party got 23. The turnout for the by-election was 27.66%.

Historic Victory and Community Support

Reacting to his victory, Clarke expressed gratitude to voters in Cwmparc, Treorchy, and Ynyswen for placing their trust in him. He described the result as historic, sending a clear message that the valley values hard work and dedication over empty rhetoric. Despite lower turnout typical of by-elections and challenging hot weather, residents turned out to make their voices heard.

Clarke emphasized his longstanding commitment to the community, stating that true public service is recognized through ongoing dedication. He looks forward to working with Plaid Cymru's three Senedd members for the area to provide seamless support from the Rhondda to Cardiff Bay.

Campaign and Acknowledgments

Clarke thanked the Plaid Cymru campaign team, including those working behind the scenes, his personal friends, and his election agent, Darren Jones, for their tireless efforts. He also acknowledged his predecessor, Sera Evans MS, for entrusting him to hold the seat with a positive campaign. A special thanks went to his wife, Linda, for her unwavering support.

The result means Plaid Cymru now holds eight councillors on RCT Council.
