On election night, Duwaji wore an all-black ensemble: a high-neck denim top by Palestinian-Jordanian designer Zeid Hijazi, a velvet and lace Ulla Johnson skirt, and silver Eddie Borgo earrings. The choice of a Palestinian designer was seen as a deliberate political statement, given her vocal support for Gaza, while the other pieces highlighted independent New York designers.
Duwaji's low-key style drew comparisons to Audrey Hepburn, with Harper's Bazaar approvingly noting she did not wear a sheath dress. Her approach marks a departure from the pastel skirt suits often associated with political wives, signalling a new era in political fashion.
Born to Syrian heritage, Duwaji holds a master's in fine art from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work explores Arab identity, female experience, and social justice. She met Mamdani in 2021 on Hinge, and they married in February this year, months before his mayoral victory.
