Labour wins Holborn and St Pancras by-election in blow to Greens
Labour wins Holborn and St Pancras by-election, Greens second

Labour has won the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, with Green Party leader Zack Polanski finishing second. Labour's candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali, leader of Camden Council, secured 12,292 votes (45.17%), while Polanski received 8,928 votes (32.81%).

Greens fail to overturn Labour stronghold

The by-election was seen as a test for Polanski, who had hoped to win the seat previously held by Sir Keir Starmer, a Labour stronghold. The Conservative candidate Ewan Cameron came third with 1,922 votes (7.06%), followed by Reform's Peter Newman with 1,612 votes (5.92%) and the Lib Dems' Patrick Stillman with 924 votes (3.40%).

Other candidates included Tyler Johnson (Restore) with 692 votes, George Galloway (WPB) with 314 votes, Briony Kapoor (Rejoin) with 236 votes, and Barmy Brunch (Loony) with 87 votes. Helen Spiby-Vann (CPA) received 63 votes, Clare Fischer (Climate) and Ben Walker (UKIP) each got 51 votes, Ketankumar Pipaliya (Voice) received 23 votes, Jonathan Silberman (Comm Lge) got 9 votes, and Tom Darwood (ND) received 7 votes.

Controversial conference motion overshadows campaign

The result comes after a difficult week for the Green leader, following the party's conference passing a controversial motion declaring that "Zionism is racism".

Abdi-Wali's victory retains the seat for Labour, marking a significant setback for the Greens in their bid to gain ground in the constituency.
