Sir Keir Starmer is considering attending the World Cup final in one of his last acts as Prime Minister, if England beats Argentina on Wednesday. The outgoing PM has hinted that the country could get an extra bank holiday if the Three Lions make it to the final on Sunday and are victorious.
Timing of the Trip
Sir Keir is set to be replaced as Labour leader next week, with former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham expected to officially take over the party on Friday and become the new PM on Monday. This would mean Sir Keir would have to make a last-minute dash to the US to watch the game at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium before heading back to London for his final morning leading the country, sources told The Times. The newspaper reported the details of the plan are still being drawn up.
No Delay to Power Transfer
However, a Number 10 source said there would be no delay to the transfer of power. Sir Keir would be able to attend the potential clash at 3pm local time on the east coast before flying back to the capital and arriving at about 7:30am. He would then have to give his final speech in Downing Street before heading to Buckingham Palace and formally tendering his resignation to the King.
England's Path to the Final
England face Argentina at 8pm on Wednesday following a dramatic 2-1 win over Norway in extra time on Saturday night. If Thomas Tuchel’s side triumphs in the semi-final, the team will play either Spain or tournament favourites France in the final.
Potential Bank Holiday
Sir Keir Starmer has hinted there could be an extra bank holiday if England come home the winners. The Prime Minister told reporters at the Nato summit last week: “I don’t want to jinx it, but ask me again if we get to the final.” The most likely date for the national day off is understood to be Friday, July 24.
Burnham's Response
Mr Burnham would earlier this month not be drawn on whether he would agree to a bank holiday. He told LBC: “I’m an Evertonian, I do not ever back anything when it comes to football, I don’t do it with England either. I think they’ve got a bit of improvement to do before we can start seriously dreaming of it coming home.”
