Alex Vindman, the retired army lieutenant colonel who testified as a key witness in Donald Trump’s first impeachment, has launched a campaign for the Democratic nomination for Florida’s Senate seat. Vindman, who served on the National Security Council, reported Trump’s request to investigate Joe Biden during a 2019 phone call with Ukraine’s president, leading to Trump’s impeachment.
Speaking to the Guardian, Vindman said the urgency of the moment required bold action, adding that “sitting out on the sidelines was not an option”. Despite facing bullying and retribution from Trump and his supporters, including being labelled a traitor by Republicans, Vindman described himself as an optimist focused on accountability rather than grievance.
Vindman acknowledged the challenge of running in Florida, where the last Democrat to hold the seat was Bill Nelson in 2012. However, he believes his experience and reputation for reporting corruption give him a hearing from voters. He noted that he carries a concealed weapon and owns handguns, presenting himself as a different kind of Democrat.
Since relocating to Florida in 2023 with his wife and daughter, Vindman has been campaigning across the state, sensing a desire among voters for an end to “the chaos”. He expressed confidence that his message is resonating, despite the risks of political violence and negativity.
