Harry Maguire has been left out of England’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, a decision that has left the defender ‘shocked and gutted’. Thomas Tuchel will announce his first tournament squad as England manager on Friday morning, but the German has already begun informing players of their selection status.
On Thursday evening, TalkSport reported that Maguire would not be part of the squad for the World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The 33-year-old centre back later confirmed his omission in a statement read out on air by host Andy Goldstein.
‘I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,’ Maguire said. ‘I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best.’
Maguire was a key figure under Tuchel’s predecessor, Gareth Southgate, playing a crucial role in England’s run to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final, and the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals. A calf injury prevented him from participating in Euro 2024, where England reached another final and lost before Southgate resigned as coach.
This season, Maguire missed nearly two months of action for Manchester United due to thigh problems, sitting out nine games. However, he returned to the team in January and featured regularly thereafter.
