Greens Launch Gorton and Denton By-Election Candidate with 'Stop Reform' Battle Cry
Greens Unveil Gorton and Denton Candidate to 'Stop Reform'

The Green Party has officially launched its campaign for the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election with a clear and urgent message: "stop Reform." The party's leader, Zack Polanski, unveiled Councillor Hannah Spencer as their candidate during a high-profile announcement in Greater Manchester.

A Candidate with Practical Experience

Hannah Spencer, a 34-year-old local councillor who works as a plumber, brings a unique blend of grassroots community involvement and hands-on professional experience to the political arena. Her background contrasts sharply with the typical career politician profile, which the Greens hope will resonate with voters seeking authentic representation.

The Electoral Battle Lines Are Drawn

The by-election comes at a critical juncture, with recent polling indicating that support for Sir Keir Starmer's Labour Party is showing signs of significant erosion. In the 2024 general election, Labour secured the seat with a commanding majority of 18,555 votes. However, the race for second place was intensely competitive, with Nigel Farage's Reform UK narrowly edging out the Greens by just 332 votes (5,142 to 4,810).

This tight margin has emboldened the Green Party to position itself as the primary challenger to Reform UK in this contest. Polanski explicitly framed the election as a direct confrontation between the Greens and Reform, urging voters to consider his party as the viable alternative to what he characterised as a divisive political force.

Leaders Descend on the Constituency

Political heavyweights from both sides have made personal appearances in the constituency, underscoring its perceived importance. On Friday morning, Nigel Farage joined the Reform UK candidate, Matt Goodwin—a GB News presenter and former academic—for a walkabout in Denton, demonstrating the party's commitment to the campaign.

Simultaneously, Green Party leader Zack Polanski visited the seat to formally introduce Hannah Spencer to the electorate. In his remarks, Polanski, who hails from Manchester himself, praised Spencer's dedication and work ethic.

"Hannah Spencer will be a brilliant MP for the people of Gorton and Denton," Polanski stated. "I'm a Mancunian and know when someone genuinely wants to roll up their sleeves and work for the community. Hannah is that person. We have just days to stop Reform and make hope normal again."

A Clear Choice for Voters

Councillor Spencer echoed her leader's sentiments, framing the by-election as a pivotal moment with stark alternatives. "This is a crucial by-election. The choice is clear – Green v Reform. Hope v hate," she asserted. "Only the Green Party can stop Reform in this by-election."

The Greens' strategy appears to be a deliberate attempt to capitalise on Labour's perceived vulnerabilities and present themselves as the natural home for progressive voters disillusioned with the main opposition party. By focusing their fire on Reform UK, they aim to consolidate the anti-Reform vote and potentially cause a significant upset in a traditionally Labour-held seat.

With the campaign now in full swing, all eyes will be on Gorton and Denton to see if the Green Party's "stop Reform" message can translate into a breakthrough performance at the ballot box.
