Good Morning Britain came to a standstill as they announced the results of the Clacton by-election live on air. Last month, Nigel Farage resigned as MP for the coastal town, deliberately triggering a by-election in what he called a "people versus the establishment" campaign.
Resignation and Scrutiny
His resignation came after weeks of scrutiny of his financial support, following the Sunday Times' report that he had not declared benefits, including staff and security, that he had received from his longtime ally George Cottrell. The Reform UK leader also faced questions about a £5m gift from Christopher Harbone in early 2024, which he did not register, claiming the money was for his personal security.
At the time, he insisted he had done "nothing wrong" but hoped that the results of the by-election would show that the county still had faith in his political powers.
Election Details
The contest could cost as much as £230,000, according to BBC Verify, despite the Conservatives, Labour, the Liberal Democrats and Restore Britain refusing to stand. His only competition was against Count Binface, the self-styled intergalactic spare warrior.
At the time, Farage claimed that Reform could cover the cost, but it remains unclear if that would be allowed under the election rules.

On Friday morning (August 14), the ITV breakfast show ground to a halt as hosts Kate Garraway and Ranvir Singh threw the show over to senior correspondent Jonathan Swain, who reported live from Clacton-on-Sea. There, he announced that Mr Farage had won the Clacton by-election, receiving a staggering 62% of the votes.
The 62-year-old broadcaster did not attend the result declaration in person, with Reform saying police advised against it, but the BBC understands that this isn't the case. Farage told supporters before the result was confirmed: "I am damned if I am going to stand on a stage, having won a resounding victory... and be demeaned and humiliated by nobodies."
