Clacton By-Election Date Set After Nigel Farage Resigns as MP
Clacton By-Election Date Set After Farage Resigns

The Clacton by-election has been scheduled for August 13, following Nigel Farage's resignation as an MP earlier this week. The Reform UK leader will stand to reclaim his seat in the Essex constituency, with the contest likely to be a low-key affair as major parties have announced a boycott.

Farage's Resignation and Controversy

Farage quit after questions arose over a £5 million gift from crypto-billionaire and Reform donor Christopher Harborne, as well as support from fraudster George Cottrell before entering Parliament. He has framed the by-election as a "people versus the establishment" battle.

The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner, Daniel Greenberg, had been investigating whether Farage failed to declare the gift upon becoming an MP in 2024, potentially breaching Commons rules. The probe has been suspended due to his resignation but will resume if he wins the by-election. If found guilty and suspended for more than 10 days, a recall petition could trigger a second by-election.

Date and Opposition

Reform UK originally hoped for an August 6 vote, but Tendring District Council confirmed the later date. With all other major parties boycotting, Farage's highest-profile opponent will be comedy candidate Count Binface. Nominations open from July 14 to 17, and residents not on the electoral register have until July 28 to register.

Acting returning officer Ian Davidson said: "The electoral timetable is set out by law and so we are bound by these dates. If residents want to have their democratic say then they must be registered, so anyone who wants to vote in the upcoming by-election should make sure they can by registering in time. You can register to vote online, or you can contact our team who will be happy to help you."

Davidson also urged voters to check they have valid ID for polling stations, or apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate. "We want to make sure that everyone is still able to cast their vote next month," he added.
