Brazilians have voted in a highly polarised presidential election between incumbent leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, seeking a fourth presidential mandate, and right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who emerged as the leading figure of the conservative movement following the conviction and imprisonment of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Voting across the nation
More than 158 million Brazilians were eligible to vote in the first round of the general election. Polling stations saw long lines, from Brasilia to São Paulo, as citizens cast their ballots.
In the Amazonas State, Indigenous people from the Kambeba tribe travelled by boat from the Tres Unidos Indigenous community to vote in the Sao Sebastiao community, in rural Manaus. An employee of the Amazonas Regional Electoral Court carried an electronic voting machine to be transferred to riverine communities by boat.
Candidates and supporters
Flávio Bolsonaro, presidential candidate for the Partido Liberal, spoke to the press after casting his vote, accompanied by his wife Fernanda Bolsonaro. Supporters of the right-wing candidate gathered in Porto Alegre to await the first results.
Lula greeted supporters after voting in Sao Bernardo do Campo. His supporters were seen wearing propaganda earrings and displaying tattoos of the president, while others gathered in downtown Rio to watch the vote count on a big screen.
Scenes from election day
In Rio de Janeiro, voters cast their ballots at polling stations across the city. A woman wearing the national football team's jersey walked her dogs along Copacabana Beach, and soldiers stood guard at Leblon beach. A dog slept on campaign leaflets outside a polling station, and streets were strewn with electoral campaign leaflets in Cidade de Deus.
Farm worker Herlon Saquetto prepared the horse tack as his grandson Brayan Ribeiro Muller, 8, stood with a horse before they headed to a polling station in Sao Gabriel, Rio Grande do Sul state. A Brazilian citizen residing overseas held up a sticker after voting in Florida.
