British Billionaire Christopher Harborne's Major Donations Propel Reform UK
Reform UK has secured another substantial financial boost from a prominent cryptocurrency investor, further solidifying its fundraising advantage over both Labour and the Conservatives in recent years. The Electoral Commission revealed on Thursday that Christopher Harborne, a British businessman with deep ties to right-wing politics and Brexit, donated an additional £3 million to Nigel Farage's party in November last year.
Record-Breaking Contributions
This latest donation follows a previous £9 million gift from Harborne, which stands as the largest single donation from a living person to a political party in UK history. Combined, these contributions mean Harborne was responsible for more than half of the £5.5 million raised by Reform UK in the fourth quarter of last year. His financial support has been instrumental in positioning Reform UK ahead of its rivals in terms of fundraising during this period.
Who Is Christopher Harborne?
Christopher Harborne is a British billionaire in his early sixties, educated at the elite Westminster School near Parliament before studying at Downing College, Cambridge, and earning an MBA from INSEAD. Currently residing in Thailand, he holds Thai citizenship under the name Chakrit Sakunkrit and has built a diverse business portfolio.
His wealth stems from a career that began as a management consultant at McKinsey and Co, followed by a move to Asia to run a research company. Today, he serves as the chief executive of Sherriff Global Group, which trades in private planes, and owns AML Global, a firm specialising in aviation fuel sales. Additionally, Harborne has held a shareholder stake in defence tech firm Qinetiq, which has secured Ministry of Defence contracts, and is a technology investor with interests in cryptocurrency, including a shareholder position in Tether.
Political Involvement and History
Harborne has a long history of supporting right-wing causes, having made significant donations to both the Brexit Party and the Conservative Party. In 2019, he donated £6 million to the Brexit Party and an additional £3 million shortly before the general election. Since 2001, he has also contributed smaller annual amounts of around £15,000 to the Tories.
In November 2022, Harborne made one of the largest donations ever to an individual British politician, giving £1 million to the private office of Boris Johnson. He later acted as an adviser to the former prime minister during a trip to Kyiv in September 2023 to meet Volodymyr Zelensky, highlighting his close ties to political figures.
Reform UK's Response
Reform UK has denied any connection between Harborne's donations and Nigel Farage's promotion of Tether or support for cryptocurrency deregulation in the UK. A party spokesperson stated, "No. [It is] because [Harborne] supports Reform UK, just like he supported the Brexit Party," emphasising that the donations are driven by ideological alignment rather than policy influence.
This development underscores the growing financial clout of Reform UK, fueled by high-net-worth individuals like Harborne, and raises questions about the role of major donors in shaping political landscapes. As the party continues to attract substantial funding, its position in British politics is likely to evolve, with Harborne's contributions playing a pivotal role in its current trajectory.
