Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has disclosed that the United States has issued a strict June deadline for Ukraine and Russia to finalise a peace agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for nearly four years. In remarks delivered to reporters on Friday, with an embargo lifted on Saturday morning, Zelenskyy outlined the American ultimatum, highlighting the Trump administration's firm stance on resolving the protracted war.
US Ultimatum and Potential Pressure
Zelenskyy elaborated that if the June deadline is not met, the US is likely to exert significant pressure on both nations to comply. "The Americans are proposing the parties end the war by the beginning of this summer and will probably put pressure on the parties precisely according to this schedule," he stated. He further emphasised the US commitment, noting, "And they say that they want to do everything by June. And they will do everything to end the war. And they want a clear schedule of all events." This development underscores a heightened US involvement in brokering a resolution, as the conflict continues to destabilise the region.
Upcoming Trilateral Talks in Miami
In a related move, Zelenskyy revealed that the US has proposed hosting the next round of trilateral talks in their country for the first time, with Miami as the likely venue scheduled for next week. "We confirmed our participation," he affirmed, indicating Ukraine's willingness to engage in these critical discussions. This initiative follows previous US-brokered trilateral talks held in Abu Dhabi, which failed to yield a breakthrough due to entrenched positions from both sides.
Stalemate and Conflicting Demands
The warring parties remain deadlocked over mutually exclusive demands, complicating peace efforts. Russia insists on Ukraine's withdrawal from the Donbas region, where intense fighting persists, a condition that Kyiv has categorically rejected. Zelenskyy's comments shed light on the diplomatic challenges ahead, as the US deadline adds urgency to negotiations that have so far been unproductive. The situation highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, with international pressure mounting to find a viable path to peace.
