Prince William Engages with Saudi Women on Societal Reforms During Riyadh Visit
The Prince of Wales delved into discussions about recent freedoms and societal transformations with Saudi women on the second day of his three-day official visit to the kingdom. William explored several initiatives in Riyadh, focusing on the profound changes reshaping the nation's social landscape.
Intimate Dinner with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
Prior to his engagements, the prince shared an intimate dinner with Saudi ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, commonly referred to as MBS, on Monday evening. The gathering aimed to strengthen bilateral ties between the United Kingdom and one of its closest Middle East allies.
A royal source described the evening as warm and far-ranging, with conversations touching on many aspects of the UK-Saudi relationship. In a gesture of goodwill, William presented MBS with an England football shirt signed and worn by captain Harry Kane during the England versus Senegal friendly match on June 10, 2025.
Tour of the Ambitious Sports Boulevard Project
William began his first full day by walking along a section of the Sports Boulevard, an expansive green thoroughfare in Riyadh that has been nominated for his Earthshot Prize. This ambitious project spans over 70 miles, connecting cycling paths, horse trails, green parks, and cultural landmarks.
The initiative is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, a strategic framework designed to diversify the economy and enhance quality of life through sustainability and innovation. It represents a significant shift towards creating a more open and environmentally conscious society.
Conversations on Women's Empowerment and Societal Change
During his tour, the prince stopped at a popular cafe, where he chatted with locals including Reem Alrowaili and her seven-year-old daughter Eliana Mufti. Their discussion centered on the dramatic societal changes and the empowerment of women in Saudi Arabia.
Ms Alrowaili, who gifted William three grape-flavoured lollipops from Eliana for his children, reflected on the transformation. "We were talking about the changes and women's empowerment," she said. "I am 43 years old, I lived the old days where we were not allowed to do anything, and now I'm really happy for my daughter because she will experience the good life, the better life."
William's interactions highlighted the ongoing reforms spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, which have opened new opportunities for women in various sectors. The prince's visit underscores the UK's support for these developments while fostering diplomatic and economic partnerships.
This trip marks a continued effort to engage with key allies in the Middle East, promoting dialogue on social progress and environmental sustainability. The discussions and site visits emphasize the mutual interests in building a more inclusive and prosperous future for both nations.
