The Prince of Wales faced unexpected questions about the ongoing Jeffrey Epstein scandal during his official visit to Saudi Arabia. William was challenged by broadcast media regarding Prince Andrew's involvement while observing talented schoolgirls playing football at Misk Sports City in Riyadh.
Royal Visit Overshadowed by Epstein Controversy
A reporter travelling with the royal delegation shouted twice: "Sir, to what extent do you think the royal family has done enough around the Andrew and Epstein issue." The Prince of Wales, midway through his three-day diplomatic mission, was some distance away and did not respond as he walked off the football pitch. It remains unclear whether William heard the question clearly amidst the bustling sports ground environment.
The royal family's activities in recent weeks have been significantly overshadowed by the Epstein scandal, which was reignited in January when US authorities released millions of documents associated with the convicted sex offender. Prince Andrew, the King's disgraced brother, was stripped of his royal titles in December following years of allegations concerning his association with Epstein.
Carefully Coordinated Royal Statements
Before William's arrival in Riyadh on Monday, Kensington Palace issued the first public statement from the Prince and Princess of Wales regarding the Epstein revelations. A palace spokesperson confirmed: "I can confirm that the Prince and Princess of Wales have been deeply concerned by the continued revelations. Their thoughts remain focused on the victims."
This statement was strategically released hours before William's Saudi arrival, indicating Kensington Palace's desire to establish the royal couple's position clearly. The timing allowed William to concentrate on his diplomatic mission aimed at strengthening United Kingdom ties with this crucial Middle Eastern ally.
Buckingham Palace followed with its own statement, expressing the King's "profound concern" about allegations concerning Andrew's conduct. The Palace emphasized it would "stand ready to support" police investigations if approached regarding these claims.
Focus on Saudi Women's Progress
Despite the Epstein-related interruptions, William's visit primarily focused on understanding the significant strides Saudi women have made since Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman began opening up Saudi society. The controversial ruler, who heads an absolute monarchy accused of human rights violations, has nevertheless introduced substantial reforms benefiting women since assuming power in 2017.
William engaged with Saudi women about their newfound freedoms during his tour of the Sports Boulevard, a green thoroughfare in the capital. At a popular cafe, he met Reem Alrowaili and her seven-year-old daughter Eliana Mufti, who presented the prince with three grape-flavoured lollipops for his children.
"We were talking about the changes and women empowerment," Ms Alrowaili explained after her conversation with William. "I am 43 years old, I lived the old days where we were not allowed to do anything and now I'm really happy for my daughter because she will experience the good life, the better life."
Since 2018, Saudi women have gained legal rights to drive, travel, work, and obtain passports without requiring male guardian permission. William's discussions highlighted these transformative changes that have dramatically improved prospects for Saudi women, even as questions about royal family controversies persisted during his diplomatic mission.
