UN Chief Warns of Escalating Violence in DR Congo as Conflict Intensifies
UN Chief Warns of Escalating Violence in DR Congo

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has issued a stark warning about the escalating violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), describing the situation as "rapidly deteriorating." Speaking at a press briefing, Guterres emphasised the urgent need for international intervention to prevent further bloodshed and displacement.

Growing Humanitarian Crisis

The ongoing conflict in eastern DRC has displaced thousands of civilians, with reports of widespread human rights abuses. Guterres highlighted the plight of women and children, who are particularly vulnerable to violence and exploitation in the war-torn region.

UN Peacekeeping Efforts Under Strain

Despite the presence of UN peacekeeping forces, armed groups continue to operate with impunity. Guterres called for stronger international support to bolster peacekeeping missions and ensure the protection of civilians.

Regional Tensions Fuel Instability

The conflict has also strained relations between the DRC and neighbouring Rwanda, with accusations of cross-border support for rebel factions. Guterres urged regional leaders to engage in dialogue to de-escalate tensions and work towards a sustainable peace agreement.

The UN chief's warning comes as humanitarian organisations struggle to deliver aid to affected communities, with many areas becoming increasingly inaccessible due to the violence.
