The UK's trade envoy to Turkey has resigned after making an unofficial visit to Northern Cyprus, a move that has stirred diplomatic unease. The trip, which was not authorised by the Foreign Office, has led to questions over adherence to official protocols.
The envoy, whose name has not been disclosed, reportedly travelled to the disputed territory without prior approval. Northern Cyprus is recognised only by Turkey, and the UK, like most of the international community, considers it part of the Republic of Cyprus.
The resignation comes amid heightened sensitivities over diplomatic engagements in the region. The Foreign Office has reiterated its stance on the Cyprus dispute, emphasising support for a bicommunal, bizonal federation.
This incident highlights the delicate nature of international trade roles, where unofficial actions can have significant political repercussions. The government has yet to announce a replacement for the position.
