Former US President Donald Trump has lauded India for its decision to purchase Russian oil at discounted prices, calling it a "smart move" amid the ongoing Ukraine war. His remarks come as Western nations continue to impose sanctions on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
Trump's Controversial Praise
In a recent statement, Trump praised India's pragmatic approach, arguing that securing affordable energy was a strategic necessity. He contrasted India's stance with that of Western nations, which have sought to isolate Russia economically.
"India is making a very smart decision," Trump said. "They're getting oil at a big discount, and they're not letting anyone dictate their policies."
Western Sanctions and Global Energy Markets
The US and EU have imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia, including restrictions on its energy exports. However, countries like India and China have continued to buy Russian oil, taking advantage of lower prices.
Critics argue that such purchases undermine Western efforts to pressure Moscow, but supporters claim that developing nations must prioritise their own economic stability.
India's Balancing Act
India, which imports most of its oil, has defended its purchases as essential for its economy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has maintained a neutral stance on the Ukraine conflict, refusing to outright condemn Russia.
Analysts suggest that India's approach reflects its long-standing ties with Russia, as well as its desire to avoid over-reliance on Middle Eastern suppliers.
Trump's Critique of Biden's Policies
Trump also used the opportunity to criticise the Biden administration's handling of energy policy, claiming that US sanctions have backfired by driving up global oil prices.
"The sanctions are hurting us more than Russia," he argued. "We're paying more, and countries like India are benefiting."
The remarks highlight the ongoing debate over the effectiveness of economic sanctions in achieving geopolitical goals.
