A teenager's romantic dinner at an upmarket Sydney restaurant was made even more special when a fellow diner secretly paid part of his bill. The boy's mother has since expressed her gratitude to the mysterious woman, describing the gesture as 'spontaneously kind and generous'.
The teenager, who works as a delivery rider for Domino's Pizza, had saved up from his shifts to take a girl he admires to Fratelli Paradiso in Potts Point. The pair, who are schoolmates, shared olives and a lasagne, and spent the evening talking and laughing.
When the bill arrived, the waiter told the boy that a woman seated at the next table had contributed $100 towards it. She had been dining alone and the couple had not exchanged a single word with her. The boy could only recall that she was blonde and middle-aged.
Writing in a personal piece, the boy's mother said she was touched by the stranger's act. She also admitted to a private wish: to have overheard her son's conversation with his date, to see how they are when they think no one is watching. 'It makes my heart full to think that, whatever you heard them say that night, it moved you enough to do something so spontaneously kind and generous,' she wrote.
The mother added that her son has had a difficult adolescence, with a series of broken bones from his love of electric bikes. She thanked the woman for making a special night even more special, and for giving her a feeling of joy as well.
